WIC is a wise investment in nation’s future
Dr. Maureen Black, Children’s HealthWatch Co-Principal Investigator in Baltimore, co-authored an op-ed with Dr. David Paige in the Baltimore Sun advocating for full funding of the WIC program. This critical program provides food, nutrition, counseling, and health referrals to pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children who meet income, residency, and nutritional criteria. By reducing food insecurity prenatally and during the first three years of life, the program decreases health and developmental risk among our nation’s youngest citizens and allows them to enter school ready to learn alongside their peers. Current funding levels for WIC are frozen below the level of need, preventing many eligible families from receiving assistance. This policy must change if we take seriously our responsibility to invest in future generations.
