The COVID-19 Follow-Up Study (CHW-COVID) builds upon previous research and recruitment conducted by Children’s HealthWatch on associations between economic hardships, public assistance programs, and the health of young children and their families. It is a longitudinal study. Interviewers conduct a series of phone surveys over a period of 12 months with families who previously participated in the main Children’s HealthWatch survey between January 2018 and March 2020.

CHW-COVID uses a COVID-19-focused tool to assess child and caregiver health status, employment and child care changes, health care access, public program participation, and current and future family hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing economic downturn. Paired with the detailed existing Children’s HealthWatch cross-sectional dataset, these new data will help us understand:

  1. How families’ economic well-being and children’s and adults’ health may have changed since the COVID19 crisis,
  2. Which policies worked to alleviate hardship and support child and adult health and avenues for policy change going forward.
